Milan Facts: Fighting On Two Fronts

fighting-two-frontsDuring the the 1957/58 season Milan had the weight of two competitions, that of the Serie A Italian league and the Champions League. It came to a point where they would have to make a choice and concentrate their efforts for one or the other. The Rossoneri knew which way to go. The hearts of all players and fans alike was beating for the international trophy and it is on this front that the team gave their all. They made it to the final in Brussels against Real Madrid, but lost 3-2.

Domestically Milan had many challenges and had to deal with closing in 9th place, this was nineteen points under Juventus who went on to become champions of Italy. This meant that AC Milan did not get to see the Champions League since 1941-42, an unbelievable sixteen year span. Interestingly, for their national result that year, the balance of stats for the Rossoneri’s total goals against wasn’t so bad: 47 (for comparison, were title winners Juventus who had 43, and 42 for third place Padova and fifth place Roma. Of the totals for goals scored by the Rossoneri: 61 (a number that was only beat by the Bianconeri with 70 and 65 for Napoli). The stat that they got the highest that year was for the number of draws: 14. This was definitely a season in which Milan was distracted by their midweek Champions League commitments.
