The 1960-61 Italian Championship season ended with AC Milan in second on the Seria A table (behind Juventus). But this was a positive indication of things to come. The Rossoneri’s future was about to get even brighter. It was in that season that Gianni “Golden Boy” Rivera is announced to play for his first Milan game in a 5-3 win against his former club Alessandria, on September 18th, 1960 (for a Coppa Italia match). Rivera then made his Serie A debut in an official match on September 25th against Catania with a winning result 3-0.
Although AC Milan’s legacy of players by the 1960s had already been greatly established on a global, european, and national stage, Rivera’s addition would set new heights in the 1960s. For the Rossoneri the 1960s open up with great promise for the Rossoneri including 2 Champions League victories, making them the official first Italian team to win it. Along with that, they would also go on to win 2 more national titles (their 8th and 9th), during the 1961-62 and 1967-68 seasons.
The challenge for Italian football, was still at an all time high between the three top Serie A rivals: Juventus, Milan, and Inter, each resulting in first, second, and third respectively for that season. It would only happen one more time with those same 3 teams in that decade (1962-63 season). Making comparisons to the previous decade, the 1950s had seen all three at the top of the season 5 times. Surprisingly, the next time that all three would top the Seria A table would be four decades later (2002-03 season), again with Juventus in first, but with Inter and Milan in second and third respectively. Although it would not indicate the strengths of each team individually over time, it still gave some insight as to how their rivalry climaxed and waned over the years.
