Milan Fact: The Derby With A 1-1 Tie by Number 9

On one end, we may think the Milano derby that took place on November 2nd of 1958 was nothing special as it ended with a 1-1 tie. That game however, had many hidden statistics that brought on some other interesting results. Firstly, there were approximately ninety-thousand spectators at San Siro that day, which is certainly a big number even for the Derby Della Madonnina. The other significance of that game was having two number 9 players scoring from both sides. On the Milan side was the Brazilian Altafini, while on the Inter side was Argentinian Angelillo.

So how rare was this occurence? Well, the derby would have to go on for thirty-three years before another 1-1 tie would be scored by number 9 players again. That event took place in a Derby played on December 1, 1991, with Milan’s Golden Dutchman Van Basten and Inter’s German Jurgen Klinsmann. The only difference between both teams during that season (and still quite impressive) was that in 1958 Milan won the scudetto while Inter ended in third. In 1991 the Rossoneri came second behind Sampdoria and still Inter following behind in third. Maybe the number 9 had something to do with it, but certainly it would be something to look out for if ever it would happen again in the future. Most Milanisti would be expecting another scudetto, or at least a lead ahead of Inter in the Serie A standing for that season.
