It is not known how often the phrase “Football is not a sport for young ladies” was said throughout history, but we know for certain Guido Ara said it many times. It’s not possible to think of this expression being popularized today, but this would be a common expression in his day. Guido was Milan’s one time coach for the 1940/41 season also known for his catchphrases. Such catchphrases were known during his time to be imprinted in the minds of football players and journalists alike.
According to Emilio Colombo (former president of the Rossoneri, replaced by Umberto Trabattoni in 1940) he would be known to say that a player, particularly a defender, must “wait for his opponent at the gate and make them work.” This was a philosophy that became part of the so-called “Italian System” of playing, that consisted of getting into action before their opponents built their formations. Under Guido’s leadership, Milan finished third for that season, and it was the second time in their previous five years where they finished behind Bologna and Ambrosiana.
