Milan’s manager in the late 1950s was Giuseppe (Gipo) Viani. He got his nickname “Sceriffo” (Italian for Sheriff) because of his manner of doing things very abruptly and on impulse. Despite his brisk ways, Milan won their sixth Scudetto in the 1956/57 season. It was a season where even Juventus could only make 9th place.
The beginning of the season was already on a high note, and the Rossoneri had seen a nice series of victories for their first ten gamedays. The new coach Gipo had a trump card player up his sleeve, Gastone Bean, who made his debut in an unfortunate loss against a Padua-Milan (2-0) result. Despite this, the young man from Milan’s Primavera youth had a successful season. He was a true striker as went on to score seventeen goals. The slow start to the season was soon forgotten. Also to follow was the departure of the Rossoneri’s best striker of all-time Gunnar Nordahl, who played at San Siro against Roma. This was his third scudetto, while joining his fellow Rossoneri to celebrate their sixth championship win. The season was won with Milan having 6 points ahead of Fiorentina, a team they had also beat at both their home and away games. The Rossoneri champion team that year consisted of Buffon, Fontana, Zagatti, Liedholm, Zannier, Bergamaschi, Mariani, C. Galli, Farina, Schiaffino, Bredesen, and of course Viani as Manager.
