Fun Fact: Origins of the Scudetto

origins-of-the-scudetto

To recognize each yearly Italian championship, the FIGC created the Scudetto (meaning Little Shield). To the winning team, it meant that they could wear it on their jersey for the entire year following their championship. The first team to show it off was Genoa in 1923. Milan would not yet go on to make themselves memorable champions right away, as they were only ranking mid-table in the 1923/24 season. But to the Rossoneri, they felt it was not the time to complain and they were already building on in-house support to create a new corporate structure.

Football at that time was also transforming in terms of strength and relationship-building, that would change the landscape for once and for all. At the top of the Scudetto scale, certainly Juventus gained a headstart, leaving Genoa trailing behind. Juve’s headstart momentum was helped by the Agnelli family knocking on their door and joining the club. This was the same family whose father had founded the Fiat car company, and were also known as the “Kennedy’s of Italy” at the time. Only a few years prior, the family had bought one hundred percent of Fiat to secure their legacy for the company.
