Milan History: Rossoneri Game With East vs. West Political Implications

rossoneri-game-east-west-political-implicationsIn 1955, it would not be the first time a football game would have world scale political implications, but during a Rossoneri game against the Honved FC Hungarian team, Italian Communist Party PCI (Partito Comunista Italiano) supporters would be present to root for the Hungarians. This is not something we could see happening today anymore as a result of the fall of the Berlin wall. The Eastern Europe vs. Western Europe tension had some heavy implications from the game, as it represented a clash between two major world ideologies of that time. As Milan celebrated their 5th scudetto, the Friendly was organized on the 29th of June 1955. It’s important to mention at the time that the Hungarian team was considered the best and strongest team in the world.

Honved FC was out to make a name for themselves, boasting their number 10 jersey-wearing striker and powerhouse Ferenc Puskas. The Hungarians, thought they were going to make a statement with their early 2-0 lead, however not before suffering a series of Rossoneri counter-strikes, they lost the game 3-2. The Rossoneri’s victory created a strong resonance of the West winning over the East, the fact that many of the major PCI regional representatives were present in the audience was a little known fact. How things may have escalated or played out differently if the Hungarians would have won, we will never know. But perhaps it was destiny!
