“Altafini vs Cardarelli”, was the title newspapers gave the name to the game of that historical derby event. It was the day after the Milano derby, and Milan had won 5-3 on March 27, 1960. The newspapers agreed that Jose Altafini was by far the best performer, whereby he scored a Poker (four goals), and they also pointed out the poor figure of Inter’s defender Cardarelli, who’s tactics were helpless against the Brazilian ace. Altafini, was a derby record breaker; he shot the ball to the back of the Matteucci’s net three times within 39 minutes of gameplay.
The event took on a fundamental psychological importance for Milan, because it unblocked a situation that was turning into a desperation with every upcoming derby. The previous derby that resulted in a win was 6 years prior on March 21st, 1954 (thanks to Nordahl and Sorensen’s goals), and this was in spite of the two scudetti the Rossoneri had won since then. On June 15, 1958, they had won against Inter, but in that year it while playing for the Coppa D’Italia.
