When you could imagine that referees still make errors today, they’ve made huge errors in assessing a penalty. Consider what used to happen thirty, forty or even fifty years ago, when technologies and replays were extremely limited. It wasn’t the luxury we have today with multi-angled replays and cameras in the crowds. Many potential penalties went under the radar and many decisions weren’t made.
In a derby on February 22, 1958, Milan’s result against Inter was 2-2. During the game there was a strong protest by the Nerazzurri as they pleaded against the referee for not having awarded a penalty for a hand ball touch by Nils Liedholm. However, to Inter’s dismay, they had to accept the referee’s non-decision as it would not go to a penalty. Drama aside, the two teams battled out their strikes to the maximum in order to break the tie. The result did not change and neither side of the eighty thousand fans present in San Siro were satisfied.
