Milan History: What Killed Milan’s Founding Father?

milan-history-kilpins-deathOn October 22nd, 1916, AC Milan lost its founding father, at the age of fourty-six. Kilpin’s death was a result of a struggle against liver cirrosis, brought on by his vices: Smoking and Alcohol. He was buried in the municipal cemetery in Milano, but the very presence of his tomb seemed lost and forgotten.

His final resting place was identified by historian Luigi La Rocca in 1990 but the location was difficult to detect, because the headstone was in a part of the cemetery reserved for Protestants. In 1999, for the one hundred year anniversary of AC Milan, the club paid for a new tombstone in the cemetery. From 2010, his body can now be found in the Famedio, the main memorial chapel of the cemetary. It’s a place where all those who have brought honor to the city of Milan are buried, those including Raimondo Vianello and Sandra Mondaini. The official transfer came after numerous years of requests.
