milan-legends-gunnar-fireman-nordahlThe “Pompierone” as his nickname was known in italian, translated to “The Fireman” was given to Milan legend Gunnar Nordahl. The name was given to the Swede to refer to his profession in his country as a fireman. He put out fires for many years, in parallel to playing football, his great passion. Back in those days many did not think it strange that a football player also had another professional occupation, at least in some countries anyway.

Nordahl, was twenty-eight years old, was 1 meter 82 tall and weighed 87 kilograms when he arrived in Italy.  The Scandinavian was among seventy-five Italian players with a triple-digit total of goals, as well as the first in Milan’s history to score 210 goals in 257 games, and in all was the top scorer with the highest average, 0.82 goals a game. He played for Milan for seven years earning the title of top scorer five times exceeding Boffi who had the title three times.
