Was Milan trying to imitate Napoli or the Azzurri? Not Really! On June 20th 1951, Milan was playing the Spanish champions Atletico Madrid for the Coppa Latina semifinals. As you’d expect, the spectators, and especially Rossoneri fans were confused. The situation: Milan players were wearing an unusual blue jersey. One would easily mistake them as team Napoli, but no, it definitely was the Milan of then Hungarian coach Czeizler.
But how could this happen? Well, as the story goes, on that day at San Siro, the Milan team’s shirt and short kits were too few. They found out only a few minutes before the start of the match, and they needed to get more. In the vicinity of the stadium a local shirt shop that sold blue jersey for sports had just opened up and saved the day. With no time to be picky, and unable to look for others elsewhere, the shirts were purchased. The stakes of the game were too high to get carried away with wardrobe technicalities so Milan went on to play, and owned the pitch and blasted the Spaniards to a 4-1 victory. Clearly this shortsightedness for player wardrobe was nowhere near a stroke of bad luck. Their next game for the final of the Latin Cup would go on to see a victory for the Rossoneri against France’s Lille.
