Milan Legends: A Rossonero “Panther” At The Wing

Giancarlo Danova, also known as the Panther, was a highly skilled winger that got his nickname through his style of play that gave viewers the impression of a speeding wildcat or feline. His nickname came from Giancarlo Bertrami (former leader of the youth sector of AC Milan, then moved to Inter) who was left impressed by the speed with which the attacker would strike against the opposing team and his ability to take away the ball and then score. His prowess came in very useful while achieving his 52 goals in 97 appearances.

Danova made his debut 16th of February 1958, in a Sampdoria-Milan game resulting in a 0-2 victory for the Rossoneri. It could not have been a better baptismal game as he scored the 2 winning goals, each 3 minutes apart, the first one being scored at 23 minutes and the second at 26 minutes. His leaping style trampled the Genoese team bringing them to their knees in the first half. He remained at Milan until 1962, with only only one exception, a season with Torino in 1960/61.
