Milan’s first major winning streak came in the year 1951 between January 28th and April 1st, with a total of 10 wins in a row. The most notable of those 10 was their win against Palermo. Interestingly those games were sandwiched between 0-0 results at beginning with Udine and the end with Bologna. It was a perfect winning streak with an oasis of pure enjoyment for milanistas.
Among those 10 victories included major teams in those days. They occurred in the following order: Sampdoria (2-0), Novara (3-1), Napoli (2-1), Palermo (9-0), Lucchese (5-1), Juventus (2-0), Genoa 3-0), Como (7-2), Inter (1-0), and Padova (3-1). In total, there were a total 36 goals scored and only 4 conceded. The strength and superiority of AC Milan was almost embarrassing, as they didn’t just win those games, especially with Palermo, Como and Lucchese. Moreover, with an attack led by Nordahl and Santagostino and two playmakers like Liedholm and Gren nothing seemed impossible. The results spoke for themselves.
Milan’s 9-0 victory against Palermo took place on February 18, 1951 (24th game of the season) is considered as the highest goal difference record in Serie A. The sicilians were coached by Giuseppe Viani (nickname “Gipo”) who just five years earlier lead a series of opening victories against Milan, first as coach and then as a technical director. As his team marched into San Siro they found themselves at the mercy of the Milan fans, and a barrage of goals by Burini (3 goals), Liedholm (2 goals), Santagostino (2 goals), Nordahl and Gren rounded off the remaining goals, once again placing Milan in the annals of football history to stay there forever.
