Milan History: The Merciless Swedish Trio

merciless-swedish-trioThe Merciless Swedish trio of wonders, “Gre-No-Li” never held back. As it so happened this mercilessness also applied when an adversary was already well beaten. On September 24th, 1950 (the year of their scudetto) Milan hosted Novara in a game that resulted in the first half, 3-1 for the Rossoneri. Evidently Novara had a very difficult time keeping up with Nordahl, Gren and Liedholm.

As the teams headed back to their locker rooms during the half, a Novara footballer approached Annovazzi asking him if it be possible to keep the score as is, or at least have the swedish trio take it down a notch. Nordahl’s son, who was next to Annovazzi during the request, and who also understood a bit of italian, was asked to send message to his father about it. It is said that Gren responded to the request, and denied the Novaresi’s expectations. His response was “We can not do that, because the public paid for ninety minutes and we’ll play for ninety minutes.” It turned out, the unrelenting Rossoneri trio drove hard on Novara in the second half, as the score for Milan spiked up to 9-2.
