Milan Fact: Italy’s First Televised Game and Seven Goal Wonder

italys-first-televised-gameIt all took place in Torino, where the game between Juventus and Milan were of great importance, not only because the Rossoneri won by 7-1 in what was called the Seven Goal Marvel, but because it was the first to be broadcast on an experimental basis for Italian television. It became the first of regular broadcasts by RAI and took place on the 3rd of January 1954.

The cameras were brought in by RAI (Radio Audizioni Italiane and eventually called Radiotelevisione Italiana) to the Stadio Comunale di Torino. Coincidentally the presence of cameras, together with the importance of the event, greatly affected and influenced the public. There were many more growing fans of the Vecchia Signora (a term meaning “Old Lady” commonly used in reference to Juventus) and they had to remain outside the stadium in search of other premises while the game was being played on the airwaves.
