In the year in which this important last minute victory took place, Milan was captained by Nils Liedholm and more importantly it was the season of their seventh Scudetto. The 5-4 victory was another memorable game against their rivals: Juventus. Right from the start, the game aroused many emotions, and the turnout of Juventus fans was incredible, so much so, that the stadium was unable to contain them all. Some spectators had to sit near the benches. It was on October 26th, 1958 as the game was played in Torino with a final score of 5-4. As the match began and from 30′ to 40′ the Rossoneri were not at all intimidated by the wall of Juventus supporters in stands.
With the first three goals hitting the back of the Bianconeri net. Each one scored by Rossoneri Grillo, Galli and Altafini successively. Juventus however, managed to shorten the goal distance quickly with one right before the end of the half. Within the first 15 minutes of the second half, the result was up 4-2, from goals by Juventus’ Corradi and Milan’s Altafini. Milan’s confidence was wearing out and before anyone knew it, Juventus managed to draw the result with goals by Charles and Sivori. It was at that moment the Rossoneri were in dispair, and that there could be a possible loss, especially that the goal that brought the 4-4 tie was heavily protested by Schiaffino. He pointed out saying that Sivori’s goal was a result of a hand ball. The ref expelled Schiaffino from the game.
Milan’s odds of winning were even more slim as they attempted to clench their extra points for the Serie A championship. At the time Milan was ranked second in the standings behind Fiorentina. But as fate would have it, Milan’s strength was stronger than adversity despite their on-field numeric disadvantage, Grillo took matters into his own hands and delivered a last minute goal past Mattrel with a strike of rare beauty!
