Milan Fact: Buffon Played for Milan!

milan-fact-buffon-played-milanYes, you read it correctly, it is true in fact Buffon played for Milan before Juventus, and yes we are referring to a goalkeeper. But this Buffon that Milan had between the posts was named Lorenzo though. Lorenzo, known as “Il Magnifico” spent ten years as a goalkeeper at the peak of his career, with the Rossoneri during seasons 1949/50 to 1959/60.

As a player he spanned about two decades during which he won four scudetti titles for the Rossoneri (a fifth if you include his time at Inter during the 1962/63 season), and two Latin Cups (for seasons 1951, 1956). He too, just like Gianluigi, was capped for the Azzurri and captained the team, but  much earlier during the 1962 World Cup.

Now regarding Gianluigi, the Juventus goalkeeper and yes admittedly one of the best that the Azzurri (and possibily the world) has ever seen, is actually a distant relative to Lorenzo. In fact, Lorenzo is a third cousin (or cousin of Gianluigi’s grandfather). How the stats for the two compare side-by-side is not exactly the same, but Lorenzo is certainly noteworthy to the Milan legacy and without doubt he is someone that all Milanista’s can claim the Buffon name came to first. Did he pave the way for Gianluigi? It’s an easy assessment, both have the same name, are related, and are goalkeepers. One thing about the legacy that is undeniable, familiarity for the name was planted (at least in the beginning) with Milan. He was considered by some to be among the top Italian Goalkeepers of all time.
