Many Serie A teams take it for granted today, but there was an expression used once upon a time where there was a double-sided phrase: “Unstitch the Scudetto from one shirt and sew it onto another.” Ever since the post world war period, it was customary to literally hand over the Scudetto: the champion team from the previous season would meet Italy’s new champion in a friendly game and, in with highly symbolic and suggestive ceremony, the Scudetto from the shirts were unstitched and then sewn on to the ‘new champions’ jerseys.
It was on September 2nd, 1951 that Milan would receive their Scudetto directly from the hands of Juventus players. The first to set the example was legendary player Carlo Parola, who reportedly did it with a smile as he handed his scudetto to Milan’s Captain and long-time fullback, Andrea Bonomi. Appropriately, and although it was just a friendly game, Milan still won that game 3-2!
