For three years between 1957-1960, Ernesto Grillo had the pleasure and fortune of playing for Milan. Although he was not considered a striker, he scored 30 goals in 96 appearances. That was a pretty significant number for a midfielder that scored 9 goals in his first year, which earned him great recognition by Milan fans. Albeit, he wasn’t just popular for his goals, but also for being a contributing member of the Rossoneri team that won a Scudetto and leading AC Milan to the 1958 Champions League final against Real Madrid. Unfortunately it ended with a 3-2 loss.
In 1957, the talented football player hailed from the Argentinian team Independiente. Grillo’s choice as to which team he was going to jump over to was certainly a question that news agencies wanted to be the first to report. Shortly before his purchase there were two supposed news agencies, one Argentinean and the other Italian, that each had reported two contrasting stories by the Associated Press. One stated the declaration of an Independiente executive selling him for 50 million lire to Inter. The other lesser-known Milanese Sportinformazione, however, had reported that the deal had concluded in favor of Milan. Who was right? You should have already guessed!
