Back in the 1950s, Milan believed that Sweden was a hotbed of talent and after buying their hugely successful Nordahl, they continued searching in Scandinavia for the “The Professor.” This is the nickname translated from “Il Professore” that was given by Italians to Gunnar Gren for his great qualities and obvious technical skills. Gren began to take his first steps as a footballer in the Garda Bollklubb squad, and then was recruited by IFK Goteborg before playing for four seasons in Milan.
During his time as a Rossonero, he made 133 appearances and scored a total of 38 goals. He made his start with Milan the same year as Nordahl (in 1949) and made his debut in the same victorious match against Sampdoria (1-3). He left Milan for Florence afterward, but the height of his football career reached its highest point with the Rossoneri, which earned him a Scudetto and a Latin Cup title.
